If it has been a while since your last dental visit, it is normal to feel a little nervous. Knowing what will happen usually helps, so here is a walk through a typical check-up.
A conversation first
We start by talking. We ask about any pain or sensitivity, anything that worries you, and your general health and medicines. There are no wrong answers and no judgement about how long it has been.
A careful look at your teeth, gums and bite
Your dentist checks each tooth for signs of decay, wear or cracks, and checks your gums for swelling or bleeding. They also look at the way your teeth fit together, your jaw joints, and the soft tissues of your mouth, including your tongue and cheeks.
X-rays when they are needed
Some problems cannot be seen with the eye, such as decay between teeth or infection around a root. When they are needed, digital X-rays use a very low dose and appear on the screen straight away, so we can show you exactly what we see.
A professional clean
Plaque hardens into tartar, which a toothbrush cannot remove. A scale and polish removes it, and leaves your teeth smoother and fresher. Most people find this part comfortable. If you are sensitive, tell us and we will adjust.
A clear plan
You should leave understanding your own mouth. If everything looks healthy, we will tell you when to come back. If something needs treatment, we explain the options, what each involves and, before anything starts, we give you a written estimate. You decide what happens next, and we never rush you.
How often should you come?
Many people benefit from a check-up about every six months. Some need to come more often, for example if they have gum disease or a high risk of cavities, and some can come less often. Your dentist will recommend what is right for you.
If you would like to book a check-up at our Hamra or Tariq Jdeede clinic, you can send a request in a minute and we will contact you to agree a time.
